The 2023 Harare Pro-Chess League games commenced on Saturday 15 April 2023 at The Harare Club Hotel. Many chess enthusiasts thronged the well-organised event to witness and participate in the first-ever FIDE-rated league in the country.
12 teams pitched up to fulfil the first fixture of the season. The sight of well-organised groups wearing their colourful uniforms was intimidating. The less prepared teams were sent into panic mode.
The event was a social scene as much as it was an intense competitive affair. Many people could be seen exchanging ideas, laughing and reviewing games on the sidelines of the playing arena.
The event was graced by well-known people who have been in chess circles for a very long time as well as youngsters ensuring that the future of Harare Chess is safe. Harare Province will remain the best among the country’s chess provinces.
The Zimbabwe Chess Federation was represented by Mr Tapiwa Gora who also took time to observe the games as well interact with players and the League’s board on the sidelines of the event.
