Brian Muringisi of Old Mutual won the 2025 Vumba Chess Classic with 6.5 points out of a possible 7. The inaugural tournament organised by The Harare Chess Society was held over the weekend at Forest Hills Resort in Vumba.
Muringisi drew with CBZ’s Benard Dowe in his first game before proceeding on a 6-match winning streak to claim the title. Everyone thought it was a fluke when he beat CBZ Lead man Bruce Kadzviti in the 5th round. It was only after he beat tournament favourite Dr Rickie Malaba in the 6th round that whispers of admiration started to emerge in the playing arena. By the 7th round, people could not help but openly applaud the champion who had emerged from the unknown.
Grace Chibaro of the Nyaradzo Group walked away with the Best Lady award with 3 points out of 7 games.
