The 4th JR Mawere Memorial Chess Championship was held on the 6-7th of July 2024 in Kwekwe. The tournament was massively attended by 141 players competing for the big prize.
Inform Christine Makwena emerged as the champion for the 3rd tournament in a row this year by fending off 48 other ladies including WCM Refiloe Mudodo who came second. FM Zhemba Jemusse won the open section without losing a single game in the 9-round Swiss tournament. However, Zhemba was not alone, on the undefeated podium also stood FM Roy Mwadzura whom Zhemba only edged due to the Sonen Berger tiebreak.
The JR Mawere Memorial Chess Championship is held annually celebrating the life of the late Kwekwe Mayor and town clerk Johnstone Rex Mawire. Despite the event’s continued popularity it remains poorly branded for a tournament of such magnitude. The opinion of this humble writer is that JR Mawere has undoubtedly become a big brand name in chess circles. It is only a matter of time before international players begin to flock in. I hope the organisers will not wait any longer to cloth this big name with the dignity it deserves.
