Zimworx Knights stuns prolific UZ in Round 19 of the HPCL 2025

In a stunning twist that no one could have predicted, the seemingly invincible UZ Chess Club faced an unexpected challenge over the weekend as they were held to a 3-all draw by Zimworx Knights in the 2025 Harare Professional Chess League. When the day began, UZ sat boastfully on top of the league table after an amazing 16 wins from 18 games. Who could have imagined that a team sitting 3rd from the bottom would topple the students after just 1 week at the top?

The recently elevated Terrence Mureya led the charge on Board 1 for Zimworx by defeating Simbarashe Chikoya. Despite Makomborero Garamukanwa claiming Board 2 for UZ, the students had a tough time on the lower boards, where Courage Mavhunga and Sabastiane Kalanje lost to Praise Kunaka and Raymond Mukazika, respectively. The other two wins for UZ came from Talent Nyamajiwa, who was better against Michael Dumbura. Meanwhile, on Board 3, an absent Tatenda Zengeni donated walkover points to Tineyi Chinondira.

Zimworx Knights v UZ

UZ Chess Club fell to the second position behind a no-nonsense Waterfalls Chess Club, which had been on top of the table for most of the season. The two teams, now separated by a tie-break of a single game point, know that there is no room for error as they navigate the remaining 11 fixtures. It promises to be an exciting second half of the season as Harare City Chess Club, who are yet to taste defeat this season, continue to pile up pressure on the top two teams.

Will Waterfalls and UZ slip due to pressure, or will they hold on and take the league to the wire on the final day? Follow the league action every weekend at the Harare Club Hotel.
